OSWEGO, NY – Defending Pathfinder Bank SBS champion Anthony Losurdo drove back to victory lane on Burke’s Do It Best Home Centers and Bosco’s Night at Oswego Speedway this past Saturday, edging Brad Haynes for another win in the Mark Castiglia No. 1.
Losurdo started fifth and got by Haynes’ No. 88 two thirds of the way through the 30-lap main event, but had to hold him off late to get the victory. The win was the eighth of his Small Block Super career, tying Anthony with Chris Proud for ninth on the all-time wins list.
“I think Brad (Haynes) was definitely better than us tonight,” Losurdo said. “Luckily we were able to get a run down the backstretch, but he stuck right with us. I kept looking for him on the board and that made the nerves a little bit worse. I’m just glad we were able to pull through.”
Greg O’Connor and Russ Bartlett lead the field to green, with O’Connor jumping to the early lead in his No. 90. Bartlett was freight trained, as third starting Cameron Rowe and fifth starting Losurdo immediately took advantage to move into the second and third positions.
Fourth starting Josh Sokolic was also pinned up high in the early going, allowing Dave Cliff and Brad Haynes, who started sixth and eighth, to sneak under him on the frontstretch as the first lap was completed.
The field was slowed on lap 2 when Tony Pisa and Steve Flack got together in turn three, causing the two cars to make hard contact with the foam. Both drivers were unharmed, but their machines were brought pitside on the hook.
On the double file restart, it was still O’Connor out front leading Rowe, Losurdo, Sokolic, Cliff and Haynes, but that all changed when the race leader got pinched to the extreme inside of the speedway, allowing Rowe to go around him and to the point as the green flag dropped.
With Rowe now out front, Losurdo and Cliff were jammed behind O’Connor on the bottom lane, giving Sokolic and Haynes an opening on the high side of the speedway to inherit positions two and three.
Coming into turn three, Losurdo, Haynes, and O’Connor went three wide for third with Haynes becoming the benefactor on the extreme outside, going by both the No. 1 and the No. 90 to take the position away.
After getting hung up on the restart, Cliff was the next driver to go by O’Connor and move into fourth as three laps were put into the books. Out front, the battle for the race lead was heating up as the No. 26 of Sokolic moved to the back bumper of Rowe.
Just as Sokolic had closed in, Haynes showed a wheel to the outside and made it stick to move into second. Watching Haynes on the charge, Losurdo tried the same high side move and it worked for him as well, dropping Sokolic back to fourth.
At this point, a mere four laps had been completed and a four car battle for the lead began to shape up between Rowe, Haynes, Losurdo, and now Cliff who also had just gone by Sokolic for the fourth position.
As the field came around to complete lap 5, Losurdo ducked under Haynes going into three and assumed the runner-up spot, but when he looked high on Rowe to take the lead one lap later, Haynes capitalized and went back by as the pair swapped positions once again.
Lap after lap, Rowe would push a little bit wide at the exit of turn four. After more than a dozen circuits, he finally left Haynes just enough of a hole down low. The two brushed wheels down the frontsraightaway, but Haynes took over the lead on lap 18.
With Rowe hung out to dry, Losurdo and Cliff followed Haynes to take second and third, leaving Brad with twelve laps to fend off two of the all-time best Small Block Super drivers for his first ever Oswego feature win.
Just one lap later, however, Losurdo again shot to the inside of Haynes looking for the lead going into turn three. The pair came off of turn four side by side and nearly made contact, but Losurdo was able to hold on to the top spot.
For the next ten laps, Losurdo was now forced to hold off Haynes for the victory and it did not come easy. The No. 88 remained right tight to his back bumper, but it was Losurdo hanging on for the win over Haynes, Cliff, Rowe, and Sokolic in the top five.
Completing the top ten were Mike Bruce in the Tim Glidden No. 04, O’Connor, David LaTulip, Russ Bartlett, and Travis Bartlett. James Babcock, Pisa, and Flack rounded out the field.
After a tremendous drive, Haynes was awarded both the D&S Landscaping Hard Charger Award as well as the Lighthouse Lanes Up & Comer Award for his strong effort. Rowe was the White’s Car Care 4th Place Finisher.
Oswego Speedway is back in action this weekend with a ‘Road to the Championship’ event presented by A&P Auto Parts featuring full programs for the Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank SBS and 350 Supermodifieds plus the always popular driver autograph session.
