CNYM Exclusive: Kevin Root Wins Pole Award for Sunday’s DIRTcar Sportsman Chevy Performance 75

By CAMDEN PROUD

An unbelievable field of 103 DIRTcar Sportsman took to the Oswego Speedway for time trials on Friday afternoon and following the end of nearly an hour long qualifying session, it was none other than Sportsman Series point leader Kevin Root setting the quick time with a lap of 22.457 seconds to earn a $1,000 bonus from The Sign Shop at Kinney’s.

Leading the field to green with Root on Sunday is Robert Delormier while Addison Bowman, Jamie Begore, and Moise Page all surprised as lock-ins for positions three through five. Veteran Adam McAuliffe rounded out the top six cars. Completing the top ten were defending race winner Shane Pecore, Andrew Buff, Kyle Inman, and Kane Bristol.

For Root, a regular at the Brewerton, Fulton, and Utica-Rome Speedways, starting pole provides relief and perhaps a bit of a cushion as the high point man approaches Sunday with a fifty seven point lead over the second place driver, Kyle Inman. Only Oswego and Brockville remain in the race towards the Sportsman series championship.

Of his first career pole at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week, Root said, “We’re very excited right now. Absolutely getting thru this takes a lot of weight off your shoulders going into the rest of the night and the rest of the weekend. Now, you just try to go out and practice to get yourself even better. There is always room for improvement.”

Root broke the three year streak held by now Super DIRTcar Series and DIRTcar 358 Modified Series driver Dave Marcuccilli to become the first different pole winner at Oswego Speedway. The only other previous fast timer in the field is Pecore, who won the final pole award at Syracuse in 2015.

Notably, Root was the only driver in the top ten in series points to lock in. Inman, Jackson Gill, Matt Janczuk, Brad Rouse, Alan Fink, Chris Mackey, Zach Sobotka, Pecore, and Mark Yorker will all have to race their way in either through Friday’s heat races or Sunday’s LCQ’s.
