CNYM Exclusive: Pecore Powers Around Bublak in Final Corner to Score Chevy Performance 75 Sportsman Victory

By CAMDEN PROUD

In his second attempt at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week at the Oswego Speedway, Shane Pecore rode the cushion of the Clay Palace around Robert Bublak on the final lap to steal the victory and pocket $4,000.

Pecore, the 2016 Mr. DIRTcar Champion from Cornwall, Ontario had yet to win at Super DIRT Week until this afternoon, but today the driver of the St. Andrews Service Center No. 0 changed that in dramatic fashion.

“Anything can happen at Super DIRT Week,” Pecore said from victory lane.”Oswego has done so much to this place to make it better from what it was. This is just an awesome race track, top, bottom, and middle. You can race anywhere and that allows us to put on an awesome show for the fans. On the last lap I saw Robert (Bublak) get hung up behind the lapped car so I went to the outside in turn 2 and at that point it was either wreck it or win it, but I was able to get by.”

Bublak, who had the lead going into turn 1 on the last lap, was understandably dejected to lose going into the final corner. The top two first went three wide going into turn 1 before doing so once more in turn 3, which is when Pecore used yet another lap car to pick the Bublak No. 27 to the bottom part of the speedway. Bublak had the lead in the middle of the corner coming to the checkered flag, but Pecore was just too strong on the outside.

“Those lapped cars just didn’t get the frig out of the way,” Bublak said. “I was hammering the 1 car and he just wouldn’t move at all. I guess they don’t look at the passing flag either. It is what it is. Pecore got around me on the top and now its just the second year in a row that we don’t finish where we want to be. It’s disappointing. We ran well, lead a lot of laps, but came up a little short again. You know the drill.”

Notably, polesitter Dave Marcuccilli’s win streak is now over as over. He went to the pits before lap 30 with power steering issues while leading. He had won the last two events at Oswego.

Instead of Marcuccilli, it was Pecore and Bublak going one-two with Adam McAuliffe, Connor Cleveland, and Andrew Buff following in the top five. Dave Constantino, Martin Pelletier, Kevin Root, David Schilling, and Andrew Smith completed the top ten.
