It didn’t take long for the Baldwinsville Bandit to find his way back to the winner’s circle on Friday night.
“We knew what we had to do going in,” said Jimmy Phelps.
After breaking the week before at Brewerton Speedway, the team knew they’d be starting up front and knew they needed to take advantage of it.
“We threw some stuff at the car in the heat race,” he added. “We came out not too confident, so we went back to our notes and back to basics.”
Phelps started on the pole of the heat race and finished in second-place, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for the main event.
“We had a good lead early,” he said. “Then we had a restart on lap 22 which put everyone back on our bumper. Then we had a few more restarts after that. We were able to stay up front and hold them off.”
Phelps went on to lead every lap of the main event and park the No.98 machine in victory lane for their first win of the season.
“With the amount of races we’ve run, it’s still pretty early in the season for us,” noted Phelps. “The first one is usually the hardest so I’m glad we got that off our back. This week we’ll have to come from the back so that’s when we’ll really find out about our strengths of our program at Brewerton.”
After picking up his first win of the season, Phelps is feeling more confident heading into the month of June.
“I’m starting to feel good,” he said. “After this weekend it seems like our brains are back around our race program again. We’re getting back into a good rhythm as a team.”
This coming weekend the No.98 team will be back at Brewerton Speedway Friday evening, Land of Legends on Saturday, and at Weedsport Speedway on Sunday for the All-Star Showcase.
